hit the streets, hit the street with a very nice portfolio of your work, you want the quality of the presentation to be as professional as the establishment you want your art hung- its all about presentation on the wall. most galleries and art salons want slides of your work, but more and more are preferring cd's to review. be prepared to show many pieces of work for a few to be selected. also think out side the box, check out small cafes and deli's, ask if your art could be hung and if they have a formal process. also get things on the web, look into setting a blog and posting a piece a day, or set up a myspace with slides that show your work- they are free- or set up a formal webpage. look into summer art festivals, some cost money, but sometimes various neighborhoods have them with minimal entry fees- they offer great exposure to the community and those who buy art- good luck

Perhaps you should sign up for an art class. My mother has recently started painting, and one of the benefits that she gets from the class is to take part in a "students' exhibition" that the instructor arranges.
You might also look into joining your local art league...I know that in my area, they do a lot of work for the local artisans, in getting their products out in front of the public. In fact, there is a store downtown that is only for selling items made by local artisans.

I think deviantart.com would be great for you. But it might depend on what lind of artwork you do. I have an account on there, and I think it's great. You should check it out. Oh, it's free to [if you check off that you want a free account of course]. It is wonderful for showing off artwork.

Contact a local gallery and see if they will show your work, or if they can recommend someone who would.
