Harvard, for example, despite having an endowment that is greater than the gross worth of some countries(Almost SIXTY BILLION DOLLARS) constantly has its hand out begging for more money.

Several people appear to have missed the point. An endowment is money in the bank collecting interest and not being spent. In addition, that "research" often generates profits far in ecess of its' cost.

Your wrong about the endowments. It's money in the bank generating cash that can be spent on current costs. And, like anything else, universities operate as part of the market economy. Why do the Ivy league and other top tier schools charge so much? Because the can!

That money goes towards scholarships, research grants, administration, and just plain running the school.
The top professors and programs attract students so the schools that offer nice salaries, funding for research and general support to the top people in a field are going to fair better in attracting the top young minds as students.

So that people who don't have money can afford to go to Harvard. Those endowments generally fund scholarships but also are used to hire professors and create new departments.

Professors at Harvard get paid over $150,000 a year, and the research they conduct, nationally and internationally, is very expensive. They also need security, janitors, administrators, etc. I'm sure they profit very well, but it's not all profit money.

Getting a college education is directly proportional to how much you get paid, in most cases. It is legalized extortion for those that have the motivation to do better for themselves.
