The vinegar mentioned above is household, but the true horticultural vinegar is much stronger and more reliable. It depends on what the weed is. If it is an annual week, digging is the best. If it is a perennial weed you must kill not only the top......which is what vinegar does.......but also the root, the entire root because that's where the plant regenerates each year. Mulching under plastic for a full season might work, but does it fit your situation? I'd avoid salts, bleach or anything that damages the soil. I have no problem with you using vinegar or boiling water, I just don't think it's going to work on perennial weeds.
