If she & my son are otherwise healthy, is it safe for my wife to breastfeed? It's been over 24 hours, our son is miserable, my wife feels horrible, and we're not getting any return phone calls from oral surgeon, lactation consultants, or pediatrician.

Please do not confirm it is safe if you are not sure.

I am not a Doctor. I am a Lay breastfeeding counseler and a Lactation Educator.
I am assuming that your wife had dental work done yesterday and these are all a one time dose.

For pain many moms find Ibuprophen an acceptable substitute to what ever prescription the doctor has given for home care.
Good Luck and get that baby nursing and happy again.
Also your wifes milk supply may be somewhat impared due to the 24 hour seperation and non nursing, just give her a few days of nothing but nursing nonstop and her milk supply will increase quickly.

I don't know about those drugs but I would keep calling, including calling the hospital where she delivered and asking for a nurse. Since you mention an oral surgeon I can only guess that those drugs were given for dental work and hopefully, the surgeon would have been made aware that your wife was breastfeeding.

However, in regards to breastfeeding itself, I breast fed five and learned that in the early weeks there were days when my baby seemed to be miserable and I felt horrible. Everything changed in a day or two and I was so glad that I hadn't given up on breastfeeding. The solution for most breastfeeding problems is for the mother to relax and spend lots of time nursing the baby until the amount of milk adjust to his needs.

Those are very short acting drugs. I would think it is ok to breastfeed 24 hrs after she has had any of those meds. But, I still think you should wait for the pediatrician to call back. That is the opinion that I would place the most weight on rather than the oral surgeon (he's not going to know) and the lactation consultant (not a doctor).
