The belief that 'butterfly' is a spoonerism from the word 'flutterby' is widespread, but in fact it comes from the Dutch word 'buttorfleoge'. Apparently there was a belief that the insects drank milk - which gives the link to butter.

They used to be called flutterbys so, Jeff Corwin says and then the name was changed to butterflys.
