My 10 month old son just started sleeping in his crib and falling alseep by himself at night. Up unitl a week ago he took his naps in his swing. But when I put him in his crib for a nap he plays for a hour before he finally falls asleep. The problem with this is he takes a 3 hour nap twice a day, so that means he is in his crib 8 hours a day, not even counting bedtime. I was taking him out of the crib thinking he wasn't tired enough but he starts whinning and rubbing his eyes, and looks exsahusted. Do I continue putting him in his crib since he is happy to play that extra hour before he falls asleep or is that too much time in there. If I put him in the swing he goes to sleep within minutes, so I know he is tired . Any advice?

I know he is happy playing because we watch him in the video monitor. It takes him almost exactly an hour everytime from the time I put him in his crib to the time he falls asleep. The time starts over even when I take him out and put him back in.

You will experience sleep routines like this with small children. Let the child play until it falls asleep. Better playing than crying. At least your child is happy.

maybe put him to bed a little earlier at night so he wont need to nap as long. if thats not in your schedule or not something you want to do then I would keep doing what your doing. If he is just now getting used to sleeping in the crib he will probably start falling asleep sooner and stop playing for an hour. I would try this a little longer since he is doing so good at not crying when you put him in the crib.
good luck

Keep him in his crib. Going to sleep on his own (even if it takes some playing) is a very good habit...DON'T MESS WITH IT or you will regret it. if you are concerned about how much time he's in there everyday, you could try to work him down to just one 2-3 hour nap per day. How much is he sleeping at night? Is it around 12 hours?
My girl (now 14 mos) sleeps about 12+ hours at night and then a 2-3 hr nap during the middle of the day. At night and naptime she goes to sleep on her own. Sometimes, she does play a bit before going to sleep (she just needs to wind down). She used to try to take several cat naps during the day, but we started keeping her up longer so she took fewer, longer naps.
Also, the ability to play by himself is something many parents would pay good money for. Consider yourself lucky!

KIds that age, if the are tired, and you can, let the sleep....and if he is "playing" himself to sleep that is a good thing...he has learned to put himself to sleep....My oldest son slept alot at that age also...Now he is 2 and I have a hard time getting him to nap for more than an hour at a time.......if he is happy, there is nothing wrong....and if he is that tired, let him sleep, especially if he is still sleeping all night.

It is entirely up to you. Nothing seems wrong. It might be better to get him used to putting himself to sleep, rather than using the swing and getting dependent on it. You are lucky to have such a well content child.

My daughter used to sleep a lot (she slept through the night since she was born) and she turned out to be very tall. She is 13 years old and about 5'10" now.

Go ahead and put him in his crib. It will not harm him in any way. You are lucky that he is able to sooth himself to sleep. My grandson could not do that so it was a struggle every night to get him to slow down long enough to fall asleep.
