"Say somehting philosophical? Are you kidding me? You'd be wise to take this advice: sometimes it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, then to speak and remove all doubt."
Of course if its someone that you respect and being a smartass is not an option, then just quote someone (something simple would probablt work best based on the Q)
"the unexamined life is not worth living"
"I think therefore I am"
"Wisdom is knowing the extent of your ignorance"
you get the idea

Too bad mankind isn't and freeways aren't. Or you could respond with "make sure you take notes, there will be a test in 15 minutes".

"I'd say something philosophical, but you wouldn't understand..."

i say, 'about what'? i dont try to play those kinds of games with other people. have a normal conversation or forget it. if you have to, start talking about your favorite philosopher or philosophy, i guess, if you have one, many people do not!

Say, "Ah, but do you not see the philosophical reasoning behind my silence?"
Then after that, say nothing. ^_^

I go quiet in a frenzy of thinking...and then I blush because I can't think of anything to say.
