If I were to visit the US for less than 24 hours and buy a bunch of clothes, do I have to declare it and pay taxes when I come back into Canada? Or does it depend on how much it costs? If so, how much is allowed without having to declare it?

For a day trip (under 24 hours) you are essentially at the mercy of the customs agent.

You are required to declare ANY and all items brought back to Canada from the U.S. They will ask you for the value of the goods, and possibly for the receipts, so have those handy. And yes, you could be required to pay duty on them.

For a trip of 24-48 hours, you can bring back $50 worth of items without paying duty.

If you are in the U.S. 48 hours, you can bring back $400 worth of merchandise duty free.

By Canadian law you are required to declare your purchases. If you stay more than 24 hrs. there is a $cdn 50 exemption.

Do like i do take an exta suit case and take the tags of the new cloths and pack them up. People do it all the time, its just when you buy something you can't hide is when you have to clam it.
