Why some historians claim1929-45 "made Americans who we are as a people and as a country?

We struggled through a great depression that challenged us as a nation; we were again challenged to defend ourselves against that world.

We discovered who we were and what we were really made of, discarding preconceived notions of a person's worth (OK, it took a lot longer than that, but we started it then)

Rebounding from the depths of a depression to become the sole superpower after WWII...at least one of em.... Adversity in the form of economics, and then unprovoked aggression against us, made us stronger i suppose, as a people and country.

country's were separated by oceans. and travel was not for the average person. people with money could travel.
the war brought GI's over there. they saw the world and were educated ,technology changed the people and the world.
the atomic age was born , the v-2 rockets bombs made our space shuttle and other advances.
Progress was made in the name of war in the 1940's an on.
