The biggest users of electricity in the home are the hot water heater and the home heat.
Turn the hot water heater down (to 110) or, if you're out of town for a while, turn it off.
Turn the heat in the house down when you're not there, turn it down at night (you're under the covers anyway).
If you REALLY want to be anal-retentive about it, unplug all appliances that have a transformer with them.

Sounds like your talking of an appartment or home? If so in the winter turn the tempture down even more if you have it on 72 try 62. Same with the A/C in the summer. Then check your Water heater turn it back or you can spend some money and have a water heater saver installed where when you are home the water heater is higher and when you leave it doesn't heat the water as much. On hot days close the drapes facing the sun and open windows at night turning off the a/c. in the wintertime open the drapes facing the sun during the day and close all drapes at night. Turn the tempture of your refregerator up. Put smaller watt light bulbs in. If you have a clothes washer wash with cold water or with less heat on warm washes instead of hot. Hang clothing outside or in the kitchen or bathroom. Get a fan instead of a/c for more mild days. Take a cold shower when you get home you'll feel refreshed and it will make you feel more comfortable. Add insulation to your own home if you own and if you don't have thermopane windows put plastic on them to cut down on drafts.

I am going through the same thing now, and I live in a little 2 bedroom townhome. The bill shot up to about $130 and made me a little irate to be honest. We have a total of 15 lights (bulbs) throughout the apt. I ripped out all of those 60-100 watt bulbs and put in 13 watt fluorescent bulbs. Let me tell ya, there much brighter, will last much longer, about 6-7 years with average use, and total wattage consumption has significantly decreased. I went from a wattage consumption of (roughly) 1220 watts (bulb ratings), down to 195!!! I'm still waiting for my first bill to come through since I just did this last month. I strongly recommend you replace your normal bulbs with fluorescent.
P.S. There's no filament to break if a lamp falls on the floor either!! My 3 year old has dropped her lamp while it was on numerous times!! Fluorescent's have greater advantages than standard filament bulbs.
Hope this helps you.

Turn down the big wattage items - baseboard heaters, water heaters - if you have an electric water heater, try to use less hot water. Buy a thermometer for your refrigerator and freezer to check if your fridge is at the right temperature. If it's too cold, you can turn down the fridge so the compressor isn't running as much.
Other things are computers and tv's. I've noticed when I leave my computer and tv on most of the days my bills are much higher.
Also, I noticed my local utility charges different rates between winter and summer so the goal is to reduced kW used instead of $ spent.

well Turn you Furnace down to 68 ,Trust me turning it down a few notches will save you some Money. In the Winter put up Plastic on your windows or Blankets. They have these things that are made from fabric and foam and you put them in front of your front and back doors to keep the draft out. When it gets dark ou at night I turn my Lights off and use candles. If you have a washer and dry don't open and close the dryer door.In the Winter and it is nice and sunny out open your Blinds and let the heat in,you will notice that your furnace wont turn on as much.In The summer time close your Blinds so the heat won't come in and make your air conditioner turn on more.Use florescent light they use alot less wattage than regular Bulbs.

Depending on the outside temp I would not turn the unit off. If you turn the unit off and it gets very hot in the house or apartment the unit would run longer to get you to the desired temp.It would be better and also save money by setting the stat up to 80-82 during the hours you are posting. That way it will not have to work as hard to cool back down once you turn the unit stat down..

Set thermostat down a few degrees and dress warmer or reverse for summer.
Power off computer and tv when not in use.
Lower water temp a few degrees.
Take shorter showers.
Wash clothes and dishes when you have a full load only.
Partially dry clothing for fluffiness and dry on hangers. This is not going to work for towels, etc unless you have a place to hang them.
If you have poor insulation in walls and attic, add more.
Good luck.
