I have this strong phobia for snakes and in my younger days, we used to live in an area that had many of them around?

Snakes in dreams often carry "New knowledge and insights from the depths of the unconscious"....They have venom..which can make you sick...but, it also inoculates you !!...So, in the Bible, when the asp came out of the fire and bit Paul...he just shook it off...he had already had more than his share of psychological upheaval..being a Jews Jew..and then the apostle to the gentiles...LOL

I've known people with snake phobias...when the fear is too great..the unconscious will replace the snake with some little furry something or other..usually alien looking..not in a scary way...IF you still have snake dreams...then, your unconscious (in its wisdom) does not want the symbolism or process messed with...The most powerful changes occur when 'bitten'...be prepared for emotional tumult...That's just the way it works...But, you are a wholer, more genuine and more complete human being after it....

I hope this helps you to get past this hurdle.

The actual 'snake handlers' in some sects...are taking something symbolic and making it empirical....some get bitten, refuse medical help and die. Just an aside..to show how empiricism can be far off the mark when it comes to the invisible/spiritual realm.

Maybe they are representative of - you know. If you're afraid, perhaps you could have been abused when you were a child. Going to speak with a therapist about this can't hurt. It doesn't mean that you were abused either, just check it out to ease your mind.
