What would modern society do? Our satellites would be useless. Our cell phones wouldn't work. Walmart would close. OH NO!
CME= Coronal Mass Ejection

Yes, I should have interjected the word LARGE or MASSIVE CME. Whoever lectured me must have known that, or was she just trying to show us how much she thinks she knows?

In 1858 a massive CME raised the temps several degrees in an instant. Had this event happened now, scientists estimate it would affect almost all the electronics on Earth.

An EMP ( electro magnetic pulse ) surge that covered 50% of the earth would be the worst disaster in human history.
To your list add a few other things - no electricity ( generators and control circuits would be fried - as would the spares ) - no manufacturing - no farming - no automobiles - no trains or planes

in fact nothing that had an electrical circuit of any type ( every transformer would also fry )

fires all over the place - major disturbances to the magnetic field with possible collapse of the radiation protection it affords us

DOOMSDAY for civilization

sorry forgot - CME's are common and cause flares - i assumed you meant a LARGE one that caused a massive flare that had EMP effects ( if these assumptions are wrong then your question would make no sense ! )

If there was a CME of MEGA proportions on just the right track we could be hit by actual matter and intense radiation so the effects i listed above wouldn't really matter

We have had big CMEs before and survived. Some things would go down, but not all. And if everything really went down world wide, it would be disruptive, but we would recover.

most equipment would be fine actually. computers with metal cases would be unaffected. power strips would still work. Cell phones would most likely be broken. Bigger machines would be fine though.
