Can you guess which president made a pledge "to repair the [environmental] damage already done and to establish new criteria to guide us in the future?"

The answer: Richard M. Nixon, on February 10, 1970.

Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt was the first American president to consider the long-term needs for efficient conservation of national resources.Roosevelt urged congress to establish the United States Forest Service (1905), to manage government forest lands, and he appointed Gifford Pinchot to head the service. Roosevelt set aside more land for national parks and nature preserves than all of his predecessors combined, 194 million acres. In all, by 1909, the Roosevelt administration had created an unprecedented 42 million acres of national forests, 53 national wildlife refuges and 18 areas of "special interest", including the Grand Canyon.

They were not Democrats

Actually if you compare Bush and Gore's houses as Newsweek did you would learn that Gore leaves 50 times the carbon footprint Bush does. Bush as a 10k square foot ranch which uses a combo of solar power and energy efficient resources. Gore is living the high life with modern technology.

Maybe we should be asking how Al Gore plans to spend his day. He is touting global warming, after all.

What would Gore do to commemorate Earth Day?
