Holograms are typically used on credit cards and software licenses, and are meant to be visible to consumers. Holograms can be done by a graphics art student with the right equipment and can be counterfeited with practice.

Security threads are often found in money and require specialized expensive equipment to manufacture careful examination should reveal frauds. Security threads can be made invisible to the naked eye. And are only visible when exposed to UV light.

Color shifting ink is used primarily on currency, but is also starting to be used more widely in magazines to enhance the visual effects of ads. It requires proprietery ink blends that are difficult to replicate.

Digital watermarks are most often used to embed copyright information into digital images. They alter the picture slightly and are either visible to the consumer or invisible and can ony be detected by graphic design programs. You need the right software to detect these and their encryption method can't be faked with current technology.
