I am an only child and my dad is dead, so the only real blood relation I ever see is my mom. She comes first pretty much, along with my husband, dog and cat. But then there is my job, and my friends who I seriously care for.

My dad's family are all very close to each other but not to me and mom so I don't consider them in anything. My mom's family we never see, so out of sight out of mind. They practically disowned our branch so who cares?

Each case is subjective. If a person is very close to their family they say it is all that matters but for me, connections established by means other than blood are what matter more.

It's never a matter of whether your related or not. It's true that connections to family are usually strong but thats because they raised you and you have been with them so long. Not everyone is lucky however to have family that loves them unconditionally. Some grow up in heartless homes, and they need to make their own family. Friends can be just as close to you as family members and in a lot of cases closer. Theres also a difference though. Friends see a different side of you too. You can share some things with friends that you cant share with your family. It's not like a young teenage girl is going to be talking to her parents about her relationship. It really depends, but either way you shouldn't have to choose. They should both appeal to a different side of you.

i don't think so, but i really depends on your personal morals.
I believe that you can't rely on anyone but yourself, other people will always let you down one day.
If you are at this moment facing this kind of dilemma then you've really got to ask yourself what YOU want, because for most people, number one comes before EVERYONE else at the end of the day.
If your family make you unhappy then what's the point in putting them first?
Of course for those who have a really close relationship with their family its different.
But this is only my opinion.

If you want to prove the viscosity of blood is more than water, then take samples to your local university lab department.

Damn, I'm getting serious again....
