In literature a third person narrator or first person as well, it carries more power and more authority than having the author just speaking for them self. It would somehow sound egotistical to have an author saying how terrific and wonderful and insightful they are, but they can speak through someone else, like Marlow, and suddenly it's the character speaking, not them, and therefore it carries more weight.

John Smith wrote his entire autobiography "General History of Virginia" in the third person because he wanted to give his character, himself, more strength, and he did.
