Depends on 2 things.
1) How much money you have to spend
2) What do you need to be able to do in a car?
Once you have those 2 figured out you can go car hunting. Some of the important things to consider when looking at any car though is the "crash rating," insurance cost, and reliability. I recommend using Consumer Reports (link below) for auto research, and J.D. Power is also reliable. Consumer Reports can tell you about a car's "known issues." For example, if the 2000 Honda Civic cars had A/C that dies, or if a car had to be recalled. That way, you don't end up buying a car that has parts falling off in a year or 2.
After using Consumer Reports, I settled on a Kia Spectra. 5 star crash rating and a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty! AND they gave me a free trip to Daytona Beach, Orlando, Las Vegas, or Bahamas! That's the kind of research you gotta do. People on here will just give you an OPINION on what their favorite cars it, but YOU need to do the research because in the end, it's your money on the line. :)

Why do you need insurance to trade it in? If the engine is hatched, you aren't driving it anyway, right? I don't understand that part of it at all. As far as what to by, it depends on your needs and your budget doesn't it? You have to go test drive a few vehicles. The last time I bought, I went looking at small trucks, 4-door Dodges, and Volks Jettas, and drove home in a 2-door Ford Escort hatchback because it fit the budget and felt good to drive.

If the vehicle was free, I would spend a couple grand & repair the engine. . .cheaper than a new car. . .
