He was one of the.... not THE greatest.

It is a matter of opinion that I find usually comes down to nothing past the reader being either Male or Female.

Hemingway was a mans writer all the way... and mostly men call him that.

*** See Molly's answer above... Chicks tend to love faulkner.

I personally prefer Joyce.

I think that Hemingway is a very interesting writer. I've read a lot of his short stories and really enjoyed them. I like the Nick Adams character, it's fun to follow him through life as a true life "American Adam". My favorite stories are "A Soldier's Home" and "Indian Camp". I could read those over and over forever, both great stories.

Most definitely not. He was a better personality cultivator than a writer. There were all sorts of talents at the time which left him way behind. If he were alive today, he'd have a better chance.

Who was Ernst Hemmingway? Some German writer? Oh, you mean Ernest Hemmingway?

It's "Ernest Hemingway", and he was certainly one of the great writers of his generation. Conrad, Joyce, Woolf, and Miller are also excellent choices from the same generation.
