In our Human Relations class we have recently been discussing white privilege. Our teacher has given us some great information but no information about how to stop/alleviate white privilege. I have done some research and people have a lot to say about the subject but no help on how to stop it.

Awareness is the first step. Once aware -- and assuming that you consider this privilege a bad thing, which I do -- you start dismantling processes that maintain it, through educating others and, when possible, opposing and dismantling those systems that support it. You may not change an entire system all at once, but the more holes you can cut in it, the weaker the entire priviliege system becomes.

I'm nearly fifty, and I've seen some changes occur; they came at the cost of economic loss, destruction of property and death in many cases, but change happened in law and in society. We are still very much in flux as a society here in the U.S., but that very flux is a sign of continued change. We have done some things to remove the racial advantages, but we need a basic change in attitude as well as changes in our laws to make various systems more color-blind.

The question is, how do you change an attitude?

Well, you start with education. Make yourself and others aware.

Act on that awareness. Extend that priviliege -- the right to be heard, to have opinions considered, to walk safely and unmolested where you will, to compete and succeed in the marketplace -- to all around you, and if you find that you're surrounded by White people, get out and look around outside that group. Where you are in a position of privilege, use it to widen the circle of opportunity, rather than to narrow it.

Those are the basics. As you get those down, other opportunities will suggest themselves.

white privilege? You might want to share info you have with all the white guys who lost civil service jobs to minorities that got lower scores on the tests. Also might want to share this information with the outcries of racism against a white college fund when there are many black,Asian and other ethnic funds. Please inform the minority athletes and sports personnel who say disgusting racial statements and are rewarded for it which any white saying things 1/2 as bad are fired for it.

If you truly want to end it then you have to stop minority privilege so that we all have the same rules of conduct

You need to define it first. I got an education and applied for many jobs and worked at jobs I didn't like for many years to get one I like.
Most reasonably minded people will say it doesn't exist so you may want to be specific about what it is you are trying to end/alleviate.

What white privilege? I have to work for a living.

And your teacher has given you information on it? Sounds racist to me.

There is no such thing. You are being indoctrinated. There are elitists of all stripes. But to base that on race is the most racist and imbecilic idea to come down the pike.
