Papasitos is awful.
Ninfas is awful.
Taco Cabana is criminal.

Try Escalantes for mid-range, or Los Alamedas for some higher end dining.

"Mexican Restaurant" is a very general term. In Texas it can mean several things. These are my categories. Other people may disagree with me.

Authentic Mexican - what you would get if you were eating in Mexico, with sub-categories to cover regional differences, home cooking style and street vendor foods.
Examples:
Spanish Flowers on N. Main
Tampico Seafood on Airline
The Taco Truck parked at the Farmer's Market on Airline

Tex - Mex - A regional type of cooking in Texas. Influenced by Authentic Mexican but with local ingredients that may or may not be found in Mexico.
Examples:
Nifa's the original is on Navigation
Chuy's on Westheimer
Tony's on Ella Blvd.

Americanized Mexican - the best definition is to give some examples, Taco Bell's entire menu, the tacos at Jack in the Box and the Fajitas at Chili's.

-----The huge, exceptional Galleria Mall in Houston, Texas has Ninfa's Mexican Cafe and Taco Bell Express, as well as Chili's and some 50 other eating places. There are many stores there also; all kinds. Parking is free. My favorite Mexican restaurant is not in the Galleria: "Tacos a GoGo" at Main and Alabama, on the Metro Line. Enjoy! ---Jim

Pappasito's Cantina
10409 Katy Fwy Houston, TX 77024
713-468-1913
A local favorite for affordable Tex-Mex feasts in a festive atmosphere. Pappasito's famous fajitas and shrimp diablo are all worth a try. If strolling mariachis who sing "La Bamba" every five minutes get tiresome, escape to the pleasant patio.

What a great question. We have so many. I like Pico's for the big margaritas but not so much the food. Guadalahara for the atmosphere but it is Tex Mex. Have you tried Melina's off of Navigation. It is true Mexican. Lime margaritas and ask for the special salsa. In fact, ask for the special salsa in many of the authentic places you try. Often, you have to ask. A cheap but good one is on Wayside, just south of I-10 on the east side. Lunch is the time to go and the portions are large.

Merida's is my favorite if you want just one for food alone.

By the way Tony's is no good. Tia Maria's is a popular place its on Dacoma. You can find a coupon in the Leader ads that come out on Wednesdays. Juanita's off N. Loop West and Tc Jester is really good. Two Amigos near Jersey Village at 14121 Northwest Fwy is really great also. Las Alamedas is VERY expensive and fancy.

My favorite is Teala's on W. Dallas (not to be confused w/ Tila's on S. Shephard which is just around the block - Teala's is much better IMO then Tila's).

They have this fantastic salsa and black bean dip they serve w/ your chips. They make AMAZING maragaritas. I LOVE their soups!!! Their flameado is out of this world as are their nachos. Their fajita's are really good and they also do a fantastic shrimp and an even better grilled quail.

Plus this is the PERFECT weather to eat on the patio.
