Im 39 weeks pregnant and i will be 40 weeks on Sunday. I want to know a couple of things.

First, do i HAVE to lose my mucus plug in order for labor to start, or can labor start without losing it?

Second, will i feel it when i lose my mucus plug?

I'm 38 weeks right now and I've been losing pieces of it for about 2 weeks now. I never felt it but I would notice when I went to the bathroom. I've also started dilating but I dont know if I'm anywhere near labor or not. But the plug will come out before the baby does, thats for sure :)

You may or may not lose your plug before labor, but labor will start either way.

It is pretty noticeable when you lose it. It will be a lot of mucus with blood light blood staining. It may come out all at once or a little at a time.

Some women don't even notice they have lost the mucas plug. You don't have to have lost it before labor, it will come out when it needs too.. some lose it weeks before actual labor.

Good Luck!

The mucus plug loosens as the cervix begins to dilate (open up). It can come out in one glob or pieces here and there. You will most likely NOT feel it and may not even see it...some women lose it in the shower or the toilet.

I never knew when I lost my mucas plug but labor started regardless. I think that if the doctor says that you are beginning to dialate, then you have lost your mucas plug.
It won't be long now and you will have your little one in your arms. Praying it will go smoothly for you.

As far as I know, I never lost my mucus plug with either of my kids. I know I must have lost it, but I don't know when as I never saw it. Don't worry about it.

You usually have some contractions and that is what loosens the mucus plug and pushes it out. You'll feel it.

You definitely don't have to lose it to go into labor. I didn't see any evidence of mine when I gave birth to wee bird #1. Wiht wee bird #2, I saw only a little of what I thought was it. I didn't really need to see more...ewwww.

No you don't have to lose the plug. Sometimes it expels a little at a time; sometimes all at once. You'll feel it.

Good luck and congrats!
