The best example would be the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution when one political party so whipped the nation into a frenzy over subversives, that decent law-abiding citizens were sent to the guillotine for disagreeing with the ruling class.
Sure other nations had persecutions, but this is the best example of a political party hijacking the government to seek out and destroy political enemies using fear of subversion. Most other examples are simply persecutions.
