I have a sugar maple that is 26 years. It has some sort of disease and most of the branches are dead. Is that a pretty short life?

Sugar Maples are a long term tree in most parts of the country. But like Real Estate it is location, location, location!
They do not tolerate clay soils and constant wet. They need the full sun for at least half of every day and every season. In the proper element these trees last lifetimes and beyond.
The most important thing you can do right now is to remove all the dead branch and growth. Remove all the suckers (non-branch growth) from the tree. Have a bucket of water with some Clorox (Bleach) handy. Dip your tools in the bucket after each cutting. Dip your gloves in it as well after you are done!!
Insects and Disease love a troubled tree. I would apply an application of Dormant/Superior Oil (at the Summer Rate). You will also need to fertilize the tree with a boost of minerals.
Spikes are alright, however, an application of a granular 10-10-10 with minerals applied outside the dripline will work fine. Use the granular all over your garden, but, feed the dripline every six weeks.
Purchase a drip hose to put around the trees dripline. Use this when Mother Nature decides to provide less than one inch of rain per week. In the Fall mix bone meal and the fert together. You can use the Dormant/Superior Oil again in Sept.
In Mid-Oct remove any more dead and sucker growth. Think about thinning the tree so it has more air movement. Remove unwanted branches. By next spring your tree will be thanking you for the care. Good Luck.

As everyone else has said I think it depends on where you live. We live on a farm in Iowa and have a shaggy bark maple tree that we have been told by an 80 year old when she lived here that it was huge back when she was a child, so we are guessing it is almost 200 years old.

Sugar maples are one of the longer-lived maples. They should be good for at least a couple of hundred years.

Your's has apparently had a hard life.

I can't give specifics, but most, if not bothered by insects or disease, live to be in the hundreds of years old. Look at the Redwoods - 3,000 years old and still going strong. The oldest living things on the planet.

I have seen 250 year old trees. Species and area including soil conditions also affect it.

It all depends on if any natural or human disasters happen to it.I don't think you can age how long they can live because there is no way to Gage that.
