In the league, to win a match you must score more goals than your opposistion, and this will gain you 3 points for the victory. If both teams score equal number goals in the match, the match result is called a 'draw' and both teams are awarded 1 point. 0 points for a loss.
In most cup competitions like the F.A cup and World Cup finals, to progress to the next round of the tournament you need to beat each opponent by scoring more goals in each game than your opponent. If you scored equal i.e 2-2 then it would result in either a 'replay' match at a future date or extra time would be played after the normal 90 minutes and if the scores remain equal, then a penalty shoot-out always determines a winning team, each team has 5 penalties and the team who scores the most from these 5, then if this is also equal it becomes penalty sudden death.
However, in the European club clubs, UEFA rullings have a slightly different way of deciding the outcomes of games. To save on time and replays, the rules are follows. Your team are drawn against another team, during this draw the first team out of the bag to be drawn will be the 1st home team ( they will be at home for the first of the 2 legs ). Then the 2nd game is played at the opponents home ground. So that the 2 teams have played each other twice. The scores of each match is added together and then calculated and the team with the highest score wins the round and qualifies for the next stage of the competition, however if both teams have scored equal amount of goals and had equal amount of goals agains over the 2 matches, then the team who has scored the most 'away' goals will automatically win the contest and thus will prceed to the next round of the competition. So in escence in European club tournaments, 'away' goals can be worht more than 'home' goals. This may be why your friend might think that 2-0 is the same as 2-2.

2-2 is not the same as 2-0. a 2-2 means a draw while a 2-0 is a two-nil victory.

no it is the same as 0:0. if it was 5:2 then it would be the same as 3:0. take away the smallest number of goals from both sides and that will give you the answer

Look up "gullible" in the dictionary...
There is no feasible rationale to explain that in 2-0 one team wins by two goals whereas in 2-2 both teams have got the SAME score and have neither lost nor won

he probably meant that 2-0 is 2-2...you may not know this but in football....2 - 0 is a lead no body wants to have...it has happen many times that when a team is winning 2 - 0 they always endup loosing the next game....they dont trust that score.....it might be a psycological thing but it has happened way too many times
