The inspiration came when a scientist set a bag of popcorn next to a chunk of equipment that was emitting microwaves and noticed that some of the kernels began to pop.

Microwave History Facts

Supposedly an engineer or scientist at Raytheon had a candy bar in his coat pocket that melted when he was standing next to a powerful microwave generator (not sealed). What he didn't realize is that is was cooking HIM, too! That made him realize that microwaves could be used to cook food.

That's the "legend" that I've heard, anyway.

Here's another fun fact: It cost about $75 to $100 to repair a microwave oven with a burned out magnetron tube. So, if you can buy a new one for $100, it doesn't make sense to repair it. Therefore microwave ovens have become a disposable commodity. (That's sad.)

do not put NON microwave popping corn in the microwave. It just burns not pops.

never paint inside the microwave, makes your food taste like paint (i did this when I was young cause I made the inside black from buringing the above popcorn and painted it with house paint, bad idea) back then microwaves were like $300 for a very very small one (the ones for $69 now)

If you place a lime or lemon (or any citrus you would normally squeeze) in the microwave for 15 seconds, there will be almost double the juice when you cut and squeeze!

Microwave a bar of Ivory soap. It's cool. It will expand just like those black snakes we get on the 4th of July.

A cockroach can live inside a running microwave, he will just walk around like it's nothing! Doesn't bother him a bit!

Well, when they first came out, people were afraid of getting radiation poisoning from them. We kids were facinated with them, but Mom's wouldn't let us stand in front of them and we had to wait for 5 seconds after the "beep" before we were allowed to approach and open the door.

Kinda funny as we ate the food that came out of them, but we couldn't get near them for fear we would wind up looking like Punkin'head.
