Since everyone's taste in fish is different, it would be hard for you to kow what fish your friend would like and what would be a good addition to their current fish. Could I suggest you try to find out the name of their favorite pet store and get a gift certificate instead? Odds are good both the fish and your friend will be happier in the long run.

Very thoughtful idea though!

The answer is none. He might like saltwater fish, and we will spend all our time talking about betta. He might own cichlids which will eat anything we suggest. Honestly if really you want to buy a friend a fish take them to the fish store and let them pick it out.

PS- Keep in mind if he/she doesn't already have a tank. You'll be looking at spending at least 20-30 dollars on equipment. Even a tough fish like a betta will not last long in a fish bowl. (Unless the room temp is always in the 75-85, and the bowl is cleaned every 4 days or so.)

I agree with Pee Tee. First find out if your friend even wants a fish, would you give your friend a dog without knowing if they want one? A fish just like a dog or any living creature needs to be taken care of and isn't just a decoration. If your friend doesn't want a fish then the fish will most likely die from improper care. Even if the friend does want a fish are you also going to spend all the money for a proper set up, even bettas should be in a tank with a heater and filter. Does the friend know how to take care of a fish? It would be better to just get your friend a gift certificate to a petstore and let them decide what fish (or whatever other type of animal) they want if you really want to get them something living.

The best or coolest fish to buy is a Betta. They are low matinence and dont cost that much. I recommend putting a water plant in a vase and put the fish in the same vase. This looks nice and your friend will love it.

Before giving your friend a fish that he might not want, find out if the friend really wants ANY fish. If the person already keeps fish then there will be compatibility issues to deal with. If the person is not a fish keeper then let them decide what kind of fish to keep. Just showing up with a fish in a plastic bag is rude ,cruel, and just an all-around bad idea.

Buying someone a Fish as a gift is like buying them a gift card... Your giving them a chore.

I would recommend tetras. They are very inexpensive and fun to watch. They're also very tough and resilient. You want to get at least 8 though. They take up a small amount of tank space as well. They're schooling fish so they will swim together and a very hand shy -- so with the swipe of your hand in front of the tank they'll dart the other direction. the red eyes are very neat in my opinion.

NONE! A fish is a terrible thing to buy for a gift, unless you know exactly what size tank s/he has, what fish s/he has, and are sure it is what s/he wants.

DON'T GET KOI..they grow to OVER a FOOT LONG!...thing is...should you really get a fish for a friend unless they really know about what they're getting into.

If they've done their research, Betta's are by far one of the easiest to keep! and SO BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE! Each one has a wonderful personality of its own!

Don't pay attention to the feed twice a week person! THATS A FALSE STATEMENT! if you fed a Betta only 2 times a week, it would slowly die of nutrition depletion! feed 2 tiny meals no bigger than its eyeball each a day, with one fasting day a week. That way the Betta will have lots of energy to "play" , but won't get overweight either!

Leonie and Merlin (the mad loony Betta)

Before giving anyone a fish ask them first because it is a committment. If they already have fish ask them what they would like, they may not have room in their tank.
