Patrick: Dammmn!

Oh yeah, the second part is Saudi Arabia, sworn enemy of Iraq and Iran. You know we don't hear anything about Saudi Arabia and when CNN shows maps on TV it doesn't show Saudi Arabia, I wonder why?

You would think Saudi Arabia has a vested interest in who their new neighbor is going to be, yet there silence in the Media about that. Guess it wouldn't sound good to state that our boy's dying in Iraq are serving Saudi Arabia?

You've answered your own question: Iran. I'm sure the farsi idioms for "two front war" and "pincer movement" have been getting a workout in the last few years.

Iraq is bordered by Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Turkey is a NATO member, but a reluctant ally of the US, at best. The Saudis are more trading partners than real allies. Both declined to be involved in the Iraq war, hardly the action of serious 'enemies.' Kuwait was invaded by Iraq, which certainly can't have left warm fuzzy feelings between the two. Syria is a Ba'athist state, though not so close an ally of pre-war Iraq as you might think based on that fact. Jordan is oft-described as 'moderate.'

No predominantly Sunni state has much love for Iran - and, indeed, if they have a growing Shiite population, would have reason to fear it. So possibly 'enemies' of Iran are several, though how overt they're willing to be is questionable.

Iraq is hardly a functional state at the moment, and being an 'enemy of Iraq' would really depend on which Iraq you're talking about. Iran, for instance, could be an ally of Iraq, if you consider Iraq a Shiite state trying to repel a foriegn occupation and sieze power from an oppressive Sunni minority - it would be an enemy of Iraq if you consider Iraq a mutllicultural nation seeking unity and protection of it's minority citizens.

Similar political algebra would aply to Iraq's other neighbors. Turkey wants very much to see a unified and stable Iraq, but would be an implacable enemy of a partitioned or fragmented Iraq that resulted in a viable Khurdistan. Syria does not look forward to a Shiite-dominated Iraq, Saudi Arabia positively fears it - both would likely count themselves allies of Iraq's Sunni Arabs, however, at least in theory. The Saudis also have a uniquely delicate position in the Arab world, maintaining close ties with the US, while simultaneously funding the Wahhabist movement that spawns terrorism - they cannont afford to openly move against US interests, nor can they risk even the apearance of moving against US enemies. 'Moderate' Jordan is unlikely to act either nation, but might relish an international role in any broader attempts at a diplomatic solution. Tiny Sunni-Arab Kuwait doubtless fears both unstable Iraq and powerful Shiite Iran - depending on protection from the US - I guess it would be the best candidate as 'enemy' of both, though 'potential victim' would seem a more accurate characterization.

Iran is between, and has let the US military launch operations from withing its borders but holds no diplomatic ties with the United States. Iran has also allowed people from Iraq and Afghanistan to hide there, so I guess it depends on the region.

There is indeed a country there – it is the once proud country of Iran. Now more of a third world country run by a guy named I-am-a-nut-job. This once mighty country will come back around into the world community eventually when the people there get tired of the oppression they face on a daily basis.

Yes, there's an Islamic shithole called Iran, run by crazed jihadist idiots.

So, other than asking a stupid geography question, do you have a point, Zippy?
