I received tulips and mums for Easter...I'd love to plant them, but I thought bulbs had to go into the ground in Fall??? Can I plant the mums now before they die? And if I do have to wait until fall, do i need to continue to water these things long after they are done blooming to keep them alive and ready to plant in Fall? No experience with perennials or bulbs. I only know how to care for annuals!!!

Tulips are an annual bulb. Mums are a perennial flower. Both are different.
Allow the tulip to die a natural death. When the exterior foliage is both wilted and brown remove the entire plant from the pot. The bulb will show it's roots. Clip off the top of the plant down to the top of the bulb. Wrap it/them in sphagnum or peat moss and place in a dark but cool place. In the fall replant in a sunny, well drained, and rich soil.
The Mums, if in bloom now, are probably not mums. Hothouse Mums (sold at Easter) are in bloom. You may or may not have a Chrysanthemum. Put it in the ground in a sunny location with moss as it's basic soil. The flowers will either continue to bloom or die off. If the flowers die off and nothing but buds appear by July 4th it is a Mum. Hand pinch the buds at that date and fertilize with a basic 10-10-10 granular fertilizer and wait until Sept/Oct for the show. Hope it helps.

first remove the seed pod,(where the flower used to be) do not remove the foliage from the tulip, keep watering until leaves and stem turn brown, then remove and store in a cool dry place until fall planting, plant approx 6 inches deep. Keep watering the mum, then plant it when all danger of frost has past( here in canada may 24 weekend)

Go ahead and plunk them in the ground. Tulip foliage will feed the bulb during summer, (feeding pup bulbs forming) in fall it will die back. Ok then to remove dead leaves. They'll be just fine in the ground over winter.

Mumms bloom spring and fall. They'll be happier in the ground also. Have fun.

Mums can be planted now. water until set in. They will bloom this fall. and will rebloom every year. They do spread but slowly.

Tulips; stop watering and let foliage die off. Plant bulbs in fall.
