Just a harmless joke or an insensitive remark by a presidential candidate during a time of heightened tensions?

Well, John McCain himself thought of it as a joke. But to alot of people, including myself, it also showed an inner view of how he thought of the war and what he would do with Iran if he had more of a choice. We do not need another war President as I think many people are worried about here if he were to be elected. His views of supporting Bush's war and his joking comment of bombing Iran prove that he would probably be for continuing a war and also starting one up with Iran. This would not be a time to do so considering all the troops that are in Iraq being killed. There would not be enough troops here to fight Iran and unless Iran struck first, it would not be right to go to war with them simply on an instinct someone has. For what John McCain sees as a harmless joke can go a long way in today's world, especially when he is considering being elected to the Presidency.

Probably not the brightest thing to say, but you know what? That same joke was going around all over in 1979 during the Iranian hostage crisis. And I don't recall anyone back then getting all in a pucker saying that making the joke was the same thing as calling for carpet-bombing Iran back to the Stone Age.

So why all the uproar now? It sure doesn't say much for the direction society has taken in the last 27 years!

Normally I'd say it was insensitive... but I'm leaning towards harmless joke... I think the song just popped into his head, delighted him because he thought it was silly, and so he began to sing...

I dunno... I don't feel good about it for him tho because I don't think it will be taken lightly... We don't generally like to see our politicians joke about such important things...

Just wait till Iran gets wind of this... they'll probably get terribly offended too, so it won't be helping any of us.

I'm not one to give many politicians the benefit of the doubt but I hope people don't attack him too hard for it... I think really he was just being jovial.

It would be frightening however if we should find out that we've been planning a bombing all along tho... then I wouldn't think his little ditty was so innocent.

Both. Seriously it was a harmless joke but probably not well stated. At least its obviously a joke and not the kind of statement Kerry made about the students \ soldiers that he tried to claim was a joke.

You must like McCain's response. Those who can't take it as a joke need to get a life - that was good.

What to me is the real shame of this is that the same left wing liberal media who ate up John McCain's "straight talk" in 2000 when he was carrying out their anti-Bush agenda are not turning on him in 2008 for his continued "straight talk" when he states we need to stop terrorism and win the war in Iraq. Politicans really need to be careful about jokes, but I think it's a one day story, although expect one of those smary "media" questioners like David Gregory or Bob Scheifer to ask him about it in a Republican debate.

Sen. John McCain is a honorable man who has served his country well --- both in the past , and to this day.
His "good points" far outweigh any slip of the tongue he may have made -- or any mis-understanding by the public, on his comments.
Senator McCain , in my personal opinion, will make a better President , than what we have had .
He will get my vote.

i'll admit it, i laughed when i first heard it. but a person in his position must know that there is a time and a place for everything, and the campaign trail is not an appropriate place to make jokes about bombing a country that we're already on the verge of war with. not very smart.

Dumb, dumb, dumb and inordinately insensitive! I understood the song parody but it is not playing well overseas especially in light of the ratcheting up or rhetoric coming out of this country.
