I want to obtain a federal job but i am having trouble with the KSA's (knowledge, skills, and abilities). I applied for one position and was told my answers didn't score high, so i my application stops there. I had the expierence for the grade i applied for and was for sure thought i would be considered. Can anyone help me on writing effective KSA's to score better.

I've reviewed a lot of resumes and ksa's whenever we have an open position in our department. My suggestions are to be thorough in your answers and please spell check and check the grammar. Don't just write a a paragraph when you answer a question, write at least three paragraphs but don't go over a page. Lengthy answers that go on for pages, will tire me. I've probably already read a hundred other resumes for the same job so I'm not going to be in a good mood when I get to yours.

The one problem I see a lot of is that the applicants don't give me examples. For example, a ksa might ask for written and oral communication skills. Don't just tell me you have those skills. Tell me what have you written. I will know how well you write by how you answer the ksa's! Also tell me about presentations you have done. How large was the audience? How often do you give presentations? The more you tell me, the better qualified you become.

And most importantly, make sure there are no mistakes. I might allow one or two mistakes, but after that, I put your resume in the NO pile. If you don't take the time to check your spelling and grammar, it only tells me you are going to do a sloppy job if we hire you. Ask at least three people to read over your answers and make sure they catch all the mistakes.

There's a lot of competition out there so the more work you put into it, the better chance your ksa will stand out.

Applying for a job in the federal government is not for the faint of heart. An in-depth examination of your knowledge, skills and abilities, or KSAs, is an essential part of the federal hiring process. The truth is, even the best private sector resume will not land you a government job; it probably won't even net you an interview. However, writing a concise, but informative, KSA will make you stand out in the federal job-seeking crowd.

A book called "Elements of Style" will be very helpful to you. It's short, fun to read & a must for everyone's library.
