I am putting up a 5 foot fence to keep a lab from running around the neighborhood and stressing out that big fat dog lover down the street. I spoke with my neighbor who just happens to be the mayor and he told me the street is 60 feet wide, so he asked me to measure 3 ft from the middle of the street then 60 feet x 2 because I own 2 60 ft wide lots. Does someone do this professionally and legally and how much should I plan to spend. We live in a rural area town population 600. I can afford a mistake and have to pull the fence down and move it over 4 inches or something stupid.

It should cost about $250 to get a survey, but you should have a copy of your plat, which you can obtain from the courthouse. Look at your deed, it will say Plat Book and the Page #. Go to the courthouse, look up the lot, and it should be clear to the fencing people. You may ask for some sort of gaurantee from the fencing company. Or, if you are doing it yourself, the plat should be pretty clear. Then keep it handy to show anyone who challenges you.
