they tell you not to have sex for 8 weeks after giving birth, and at that check up they ask you what you want to do. but they give you different types depending on things like are you breast feeding and are you planning on having sex right away... I oppted for an IUD (mirena) just becasue i'm forgetful and fertile

I think when you start your period, its the timeline to know when to start taking your pills. Be careful though because a friend of mine had 2 babies in 1 year about 10 months apart.
I would use condoms or no sex until you are on the pill.

At your 6 week post partum check up the doctor will inform you of your birth control options.

Your Doctor will instruct you at your 6 weeks checkup. Don't have sex until then, as your body needs time to rest and heal.
