It will give some protection, but it is not impermeable.

Most (not all) Kevlar vests are made from woven fibers. while the fibers themselves are very strong and resistant to breakage, a pointy knife can spread the fibers apart subsequently allowing the edge of the blade to slide across the fiber and cut it.

This is basically the same reason that the foil/rapier was used to counter people that wore chain mail. The narrow blade would wedge between the loops of the mail and the thrusting action would spread the links apart and allow the blade to penetrate.

Yes it does. Kevlar is a very strong synthetic material that is like a cloth. It's actually harder then steel (it's kinda soft and streches a little, but hard to break). So several layers of such fabric (20-40) are used to make kevlar vests (usually to protect torso only). It would protect from knife but it's very uncomfortable and bulky. And the atacker could simply leave his knife in your head, arms or legs that are usually not protected. You could hardly move if you had to protect whole your body with 20 to 40 layers of Kevlar.

I understand what people are saying about Kevlar vests not being designed for knives, but really. Can anyone cite a web page that describes a single actual case of someone being seriously stabbed with a hand knife (vs. mounted bayonets) through a bullet proof vest? Even a leather vest provides *some* protection from a knife attack.

not all Kevlar vest do.
you need to get one that was made for guns and knives.

as far as physics, not really sure, but it has something to do with the fact that when your stabbed with a knife the force is different.
A person keeps pushing the knife in. A bullet hits in a split second and then its force is gone.

No kevlar is just effective against blunt velocity force like bullets fired at certain velocity. A knife can pierce it .

no kelvlar is made to stop high speed projectiles, the kevlar strands will be severed (cut) if struck by a knife. so no it wont protect you from a knife.

A bullet is normally a fairly small peice of metal shot at a very high velocity, impacting the target whereing the vest. (and leaving them alive) Under normal circumstances a knife would make it through the vest.

their bulletproof, but i don't know about knife proof. i would assume that if a bullet wouldn't go through it then a knife would have a pretty hard time getting through it.
