Speaking of those in prison that has committed a violent act upon another (not in self-defense). Why are we as tax payers paying for them to have tv, three good meals a day (they eat better then some that obey the law) and a free education. I as a tax payer think they should get bread and water, sit in a little cell to rot and maybe on Christmas if they have been good they can have a good meal, just to remind them. If our prisons were a bit tougher to tolerate people may think twice, a lot of them think prison isn't so bad, free lodging, food, and education. So its not picnic in prison, but they sure do get a lot of perks for harming someone don't they? What do you think, should those that commit, rape, murder, against anyone especially a child have rights?

For those of you that wish to attack me because you spent time in jail...WTF ever. Glad to hear that it was so bad for you that you don't want to go back. Wish everyone thought that way. I am all for educating and rehabilitating, I am just not for giving those in there degrees for free......Chainsaw it is no wonder that the mayor keeps getting re-elected I would vote for him.

AGAIN....for those that are answering, read the whole thing. I am all for educating and rehabilitating, I don't believe that those that are in prison for something other than a violent crime should be treated poorly. So those of you that think I am angry, no not really, perfect up bringing far from it. I just don't think those that think they have a right to take a life (especially that of a child) should have rights. For the one that said that not everyone has the same privileges, your right....but they can earn them depending on the prison they are in...easier to behave in jail when there are bigger, stronger, meaner people there than ones self. So attack all you all want...I still believe that people that harm others INTENTIONALLY shouldn't have rights, they should of gave all rights up when they committed the crime.

Because the criminal justice system wants to rehabilitate criminals, not punishment.
See Sheriff Joe Arpayo. He says what I think better than I can.
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio
(In Arizona)
who created the
"Tent City Jail":
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for
them.
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their
weights Cut off all but "G" movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and
city projects.
Then He Started
Chain Gangs For Women
So He Wouldn't Get
Sued For
Discrimination.
He took away cable TV Until
he found out there was
A
Federal Court Order
that
Required Cable TV For Jails.
So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again
Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.
When asked why the weather channel
He Replied,
So They Will Know
How Hot It's Gonna Be
While They Are Working
ON
My Chain Gangs.
He Cut Off Coffee
Since It Has
Zero Nutritional Value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, "This Isn't
The Ritz/Carlton.
If You Don't Like It,
Don't Come Back."
He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into
the jails.
When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he
replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the
inmates were in his jails in the first place.
More On The Arizona Sheriff:
With Temperatures Being Even Hotter
Than Usual In Phoenix
(116 Degrees Just Set A New Record),
the Associated Press Reports:
About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment
At The
Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their
Government-Issued
Pink Boxer Shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on
their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached
138 Degrees
Inside The Week Before.
Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their
Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.
"It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,"
Said James Zanzot,
An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year.
"It's Inhumane."
Joe Arpaio,
the tough-guy sheriff
who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear
pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic
He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 Degrees In
Iraq And
Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too,
And They Have To
Wear Full Battle Gear,
But
They Didn't Commit Any Crimes,
So Shut Your Damned Mouths!"
Way To Go, Sheriff!
Maybe if all prisons were like this one
there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders.
Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until
it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so
they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things
taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.
Sheriff Joe
was just re-elected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

I have spent a lot of time in jails, though not as a prisoner. I've spoken to a number of inmates and guards. And I know how all those things that inmates are getting SEEM on the outside. But you are completely wrong.
At any given time, there are more than 2.1 million inmates in American prisons (link 1)... about 25% of all people imprisoned in the entire world (link 3). The average starting salary for a guard is about the same as the average cost of keeping an inmate in prison (link 2). Some prisons have as many as 20% of their staff positions open.
Add that all up and you have lots and lots and lots of prisoners and not too many people to look after them. Almost literally everything in most prisons is there with the sole intention of pacifying prisoners. Seriously.
If giving them cable TV keeps them quiet and docile, then prisons are going to want to keep them going non-stop. If feeding them halfway well does the job, they're going to do that too. You do NOT want to convince 2 million prisoners that they are going to go through hell and have nothing to live for. Some prison riots have lasted MONTHS.
Nor are these things as free as the public usually percieves them to be. In many states inmates are CHARGED on a daily basis for things like food, soap, and so on. If they want anything beyond the basic necessities to keep them docile, they have to work to get them, same as everyone. Many inmates are released from prison with a huge debt that they are expected to pay back.
The point being that it's not as rosy at it may seem on the outside. Even if you feel no sympathy for people convicted of crimes (most of the people in prisons these days are guilty of largely victimless crimes), have some for the people who have to watch them. Their job is not easy by a strech, and what you suggest will make it much, much harder.
Peace.

I agree with you to a point, but have to point out that the premise behind jails and prisons is to "reform" the criminal to become a productive member of society. This is why I oppose a sentence of "Life without the possibility of parole". If society has deemed that this person is not reformable and that his existence outside of a penal institution would constitute a threat to the public quit paying for him. Allow a 10 year maximum to allow for appeals, new evidence or whatever (I realize that there is that .001% that are wrongly convicted) and then execute the person. This may not eliminate crime, but maybe it would send a message about particularly Hannis crimes like murder, rape, sexual assault on a child etc..

Lets just take them all and shoot them instead of trying to rehabilatate them.. Heck we all come from the perfect upbringing and should know right from wrong.. Lets just put them all in a cage and let them distroy themselves!!! After their 10 years in that cage we can just put them back on the streets... They are so prepared then huh? Who cares if they only stole because their family was hungary.. Who cares if they were falsely accused by our court systems who as we all know is never wrong.. Why should i care if since they were 10 their parents just tossed them on the streets to find a way to survive??
You know... the prison systems have different stages of privledges.. The cold blooded murderers don't get the same rights as someone who simply makes a desperation error.. Your way of thinking is so primative and belongs back 200 years ago where someone could be hung for their beliefs.. I just hope that someday your situation doesn't put you in a spot to where you have to make a choice...
I've never been in jail or prison, but the world isn't as perfect of a situation as many of us know.. The trick is .. to teach and educate these people that have been less fortunate then you and me, not to put them in a cage and treat them sub-human.. You don't teach by slapping around and taking away the right to be human or completely isolating these people... Thats just OUR anger...

Normally I'd totally agree with making prisons actually "punish" people, but I'm afraid that once the liberals successfully transform us into a communist country conservatives like me will probably be locked up for life if not killed. You can bet once that happens suddenly prisons won't be so nice.

I also disagree with people in prison getting luxuries, but I also see the reasoning behind it. It costs less to provide these simple things than to fund the necessary security, health care, counseling, etc. that would result from harsher conditions. If you can keep people happy, they will cause less problems.
In addition, if we really want these people to contribute to society, rather than go out and start committing crimes again, we must educate them and teach them how to function in society (which we should have done while they were in school, anyway). We do need to make some attempt to rehabilitate criminals or they will just cost us more money in the end.

Because it's a type of rehabilitation and punishment.
Not every person that comes out reoffends. Of course in life there are always bad apples, but i don't think getting raped up the butt can be considered "a picnic"

prison sucks. trust me, you have nothing to worry about. and yeah thier meals are great. the prisoners that work in the cafe piss in mash potato's. your retarded. if it's so great, start speeding and don't pull over when the cops start chasing you. they got a spot in jail just for you.
also, you can treat them like animals but when they get out, you will have to deal with the beast you created. give it a break. it ain't no country club in there.
