I would have to say hands down that the DYSON vacuum cleaner in any model is the very best vacuum cleaner on the market today for an upright. It is slim with a low center of gravity making it super manueverable around tables and chairs and other furniture, it is self adjusting to any carpet nap so no more CLICK CLICK CLICK to adjust, and it is great on bare floors. It has a built in life time hepa filter (good for people who have allergies) and a removeable washable reuseable filter at the top. You wash it with warm water and let air dry for about 12 hours and your good to go. Any of the accessories you can buy will fit any model you have. It also comes with a 2 year manufacture warranty. Other vacuum cleaners are only real good when they are brand new and then because they depend on 2 or 3 types of filters you will loose suction. The DYSON does not loose suction or power because it is not dependent upon filters. It is bagless and the trap door is trigger operated so you never have to breath in dust or touch anything inside the cup. The cord is 36 feet long, and it has a 17foot hose and telescoping wand so you can clean up high or do stairs without having to lug a heavy piece of equipment up and down. The accessories are also pretty cool as I mentioned before, they fit any model. You'll get the benefit of an upright with some canister options as well. This vacuum cleaner is so cool I can't understand why everyone doesn't own one. The material that it's made of is like Crash test helmet material-You'll have to work very hard to break something on it, the hose is made out of the same material parts of our space shuttles are made out of not to mention it was designed by a NASA engineer. These vacuum cleaners are top sellers all over Europe. Go get one. They are expensive but if you never want to have to buy or replace a vacuum cleaner again, you'll make the investment and get yourself one of these. I believe you can still get the base model for a little under Four hundred dollars before tax. Imagine, No more bags, no more belts, no more filters - EVER. You can also take it apart and clean it if you want to. They aren't any more loud or quite than traditional uprights. Just think, you'll save yourself a a lot of incovenience looking for replacement filters, belts, and or bags and be totally at the mercy of who ever has these things in stock - with the DYSON you won't ever have to worry about that.
Suction is probably what is most important to most people when it comes to vacuums. When your trying to push air through filters and bags that act as another form of filtration you are limiting its effecacy. Bags and filters and especially cloth hepa filters will clog up more quickly and need to be changed often so that you don't loose suction. I could go on but you have to check the DYSON out. It really is the best compared to anyting you can get. The only other vacuum cleaner I would recommend is the RAINBOW. The Rainbow doesn't use filters it uses water as filtration so there isn't anything being exhausted back out into your environment. It started out as an air cleaner! It's also around 2500.00 these days and not nearly as cool as the DYSON. IT's also a canister and not practical for many people. SO, there, how's that! Good luck to you! By the way, forget about consumer reporting magazines. I am a Sales Consultant by trade - I've sold products all over the world - I WILL NEVER USE MAGAZINES to sell or buy product. I believe those magazines are pretty much wrong and full of BFNS. BUT, do what you want! DYSON will always be number 1 in my book.

I've never had an Orek, but I've had a Kirby, a Rainbow, and several other vacuums, and the best I have ever owned in a Dyson. I bought it a few months ago and man does it ever work good! It is well worth the investment!

I've yet to find a good store-bought vacuum that can last 3 years in my house (the Dyson is the latest to go). Nothing beats the Kirby vacuums our mothers had. They're expensive, but they last forever. So if you can afford them, they are worth their weight in gold.

I personally think the simplicity. I do not see most stores selling this brand. Where I live we have a local business that sells this brand. I think most janitorial supply places probably sell simplicity. There are different models of this brand. I think this sweeper has a good filtering system and it is hardy and sweeps up good. I have two dogs and the fur is bad and my simplicity is great for this.
My brother has a cleaning business this is all that we use to sweep carpet. Believe me we have used many different brands over the years. He gets the commercial sweeper and the simplicity seems to hold up better. Over the years we have used Eureka and Hoover which are pretty good sweepers too.
