how would you know, and would that constitute A.I.?

What you have described is something like the classic Turing Test. Software could probably be written today to pass that test in most cases. No one has bothered, because that's not what computers do best. Use them for what they're good for. Don't waste your effort trying to make them do what they're not good at.

Getting a computer to act as a Yahoo Answers participant undetected would be much easier. Intelligence (real or artificial) is lacking in a large percentage of the questions and answers.

Yahoo answers is hardly a test for an AI, because there is little room for give and take in the discussion.

If I can interact with a computer in a lengthy IRC or IM (or similar) exchange without realizing it's a computer, that would constitute a very impressive AI.

edit:
If it made inane, vague comments like say "indeed why pray tell", that would be a giveaway that it was a computer or someone acting like a computer would. Reminds me of someone who wrote a computer psychoanalysis program.

You would eventually pick up repetitive responses and figure it out. Most AI programs have very limited scope and couldn't carry on a widely varied conversation.
