I have a 1997 S10 and the other day it started making a clicking nosie. The sound is similar to a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle. I discovered that if I turned off the A/C that it stopped. If I run heat other than the defroster or run the vents its ok. Only when the A/C compressor has to enguage does the clicking start.
Its obvious its tied to that part, anyone have any ideas on why or solutions aside from replacing the assembly?
Part of me thinks something is stuck in it, part of me thinks it could be the clutch.

Have you checked the level of the refrigerant in it?

Or maybe it is just the loose nut behind the wheel?......lol

Some or all of the problem may be related to the pulley assembly and the body of the compressor grinding rust together that has built up between the two of them. We sometimes can get away with pulley the face away from the body of the compressor by a 16th of an inch, and completely eliminates the noise. Otherwise, you are into a new clutch assembly or compressor.

It could be the clutch or the pistons rattling. The compressor does run when you go to defrost to dehumidify the air.

sounds like the clutch is failing...not surprising on an 11 year old vehicle
