I expect that is the case. The world of a 12 year old today is considerably different to that of 20 years ago. Most definitely the bully would have been around but the levels of bullying would have been different. A lot of today's problems are caused by the having or not having of material things, where as 20 years ago it would have been less to do with things and more to do with personality. Just as awful. I am aware that there are many forms of bullying and have only talked about 1. But it would be easy to go on and on.

I think accountability is lesser now than 30-40 years ago and bullies have gotten more arrogant and aggressive, yes, I think so.

A bully in 1964 might have punched someone, generally speaking, and a bully today might shoot someone.

In 1964 the press did not jump all over a fist fight, or a chain fight (gangs of the 60's prefered, fist, chains and then knives) guns were cowardly even by thier standards of the times; yet, yes, guns were occasionally used. Gang confrontaions today are not unlike a bully; they dominate by force as a bully does, a gang is a bully, en-mass. Back in "the day" Gangs had rules they generally followed; a fight was orchestrated as "a Rumble" for turf control; often the Rumble took place on the very "turf" in question and those who retreated, lost the turf; the rules were set up prior to the Rumble' No Knives, Chains optional and whatever was there could be used as a weapon; violations of the rules showed the Gang leader lacked control of his Gang and therefore lost a level of respect on the street.

Remember, bullying is about the bully, how they see themselves and their inabiilities to deal with it or self correct; they take out their frustrations on another, punish them and not themselves; a twisted method of discipline purhaps?

Bullies remain bullies alone or together.

Not really. Look at Central High, back when segregation ended. Those kids suffered some serious crap.

I don't think bullying has gotten more or less prevalent; it's just more noticeable because we hear about it more via the news.

Nope, in the past it was more socially acceptable. Whether it were the soon-to-be seniors paddling the soon-to-be freshmen or hazing on a sports team it happened on a much more regular basis. But today it is socially un-acceptable so you have kids telling their parents who tell school officials, and of course the media gets involved.

Definitely NOT! Just much, much, much more and speedier publicity.

20 years ago we did not have the Internet and access to immediate posting of all events in one's life and therefore you had no way of disseminating info on a large scale - think about it ... on this forum alone you can reach millions of people instantly with any question or news no matter how random ... this was unimaginable 20 years ago except in sci-fi novels ...

Absolutely! Lack of discipline at home, lack of attention from adult figures, lack of positive socializing because now a days, kids are either in front of the tv playing games, watching shows and even on this thing we call the internet. Kids act out what they don't receive that is called attention.

Yes, I think so. I was bullied a lot when I was in school, and people are teasing other people more now than ever before. Why? Maybe we're becoming too materialistic. We need to concentrate on inner beauty instead of outer beauty.

I got bullied to heck and back when I was going to public school -- I had to fend for myself -- or let my Mother (5 feet tall, scaaary lady!) put in a few good words for myself.

BUT-- I TOLD my mom what I was going thru -- I NEVER put up with what was happening to me, and I NEVER kept it inside of me.

I also knew that I had friends who cared for me, and they TOO were getting bullied.

I think TEACHERS have a BIG responsibility to keep bullying in check. They NEED to make sure ALL the kids in their classes are safe fro mbullying.

Bullies, in many cases are also scared little kids-- WHO knows what's going on in THEIR homes?? They need help too.
