It was spelled "Lecktor" in Manhunter and "Lecter" in Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. So neither of you should have won b/c it's never been spelled "Lector."

Brian Cox,who played the role in 'Manhunter' the first movie to feature the Hannibal Lecter character - a far more chilling performane than Hopkins' staple ham serving that's the mark of his acting.

Well, Manhunter (red dragon book) was made prior to Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal Lechter was a character within this movie. I do not believe that it was played by Anthony Hopkins. I believe his first stint as Hannibal was Silence..
Sorry, pay up.
if its in question, look up the cast and credits for the original Man Hunter
Brian Cox is the original Hannibal

Your friend wins...I'm sorry. In 1986 they did an adaption of "Red Dragon" with Brian Cox playing Hannibal Lecter. Sir Anthony was the second to portray the character.

It was Brian Cox in manhunter. It came out in 1986 . Silence of the Lambs was 1991. Silence is when Sir Anthony made the role popular. So your friend was right and should ahve won the bet. Sorry dude :-)

Black magic? Brian Cox portrayed him first. I suppose this is some kind of riddle or something, because in 'Manhunter" the name is spelled "Leckter" with a 'k', and Hopkins Lecter is without the 'k'. Is that it?

I don't know how you won. I do know Manhunter was in 1986 and Silence of the Lambs was in 1991. Perhaps it was because it's spelled "Lecktor" in Manhunter and "Lector" in Silence of the Lambs.

In manhunter, the character's name was spelled Dr. Hannibal Lecktor. So technically, you are correct if you are going to nitpick.
That being said, even though it was spelled differently, it's the same character for all intents and purposes.
