Sometimes the store that sold them to you will do it for free.
I have paid a shoe repair $5 to do it for me.

No need to pay for that, you can do it yourself for alot cheaper than you'd pay a craftsman and it's really not that difficult. Assuming it is a quality well made pair of leather shoes, and it's not more than a bit tight. In which case, you'll get a spray bottle of water and those wooden or plastic inserts you see in shoe stores, you can get them in most drug stores or dept. stores, and spray the inside and outside of the shoe, and then add the insert, and as the shoe drys it will stretch to the size of the insert. If you can't find those you can use sox or alot of newspaper, though it's not as effective. Once the shoes are dry, and fit the way you need, then you'll need to go over them with a bit of polish to cover and disscoloration from the water. Keep in mind, this will only work if the shoe is a bit snug, if the shoe is a size or more too small, than no amount of stretching will help, you'll need to buy a new pair of shoes that fit properly. Or else you could end up with a injured ankle, or worse BUNIONS OR CORNS, and those are no fun.

I've never heard of that practice...
Depends on what kind of shoes, the brand, the material.
if it cost more than the shoe, then it's not worth it
