I don't think the issue is really one of competency, but of morality.

This administration, with Gonzalez as their enforcer, thinks that it is proper to have the Attorney Generals office prosecute their political adversaries. Examples about such as the political pressure on Corzine in NM abound. Like this one:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/16/opinion/16mon4.html

The orchestration of the political witch-hunt was done by Karl Rove using a secret email network that left no paper trail. See : http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/11/AR2007041102167.html

This is so Stalinesque it is scary!

Bush/Rove/Cheney are trying to set up a government that can spy on, arrest, convict, and imprison people they don't like and use the "war on terror" as a reason to do so. (leaving out the extradition and torture part for now). This will utterly destroy our ability to hold fair elections.

The ideals that founded our nation lay in tatters on the floor of the Oval Office thanks to George W. Bush, the Worst president ever.

Thank God that Gonzalez is incompetent, or the Republicans would has swept the last election.

Of course the man lied. Unless he has serious memory issues he lied through his teeth. How is it possible to not remember several meetings where such important things were discussed? He definitely needs to step down, he wasn't even a good attorney general. In all actuality he as a down right awful attorney general. He has done next to nothing ever since his appointment. Many people would send him requests and letters and he wouldn't even send a reply back, he didn't even say no. He did nothing. He really needs to go.

Roberto Gonzalez probably isn't, but that's why the Attorney General is Alberto Gonzales. But, to answer your actual question, no, he is just a puppet for the Bush Administration.

Aside from political arrogance and ignorance, this administration's credentials are
1. must be ADHD
2. must be borderline intelligence.
3. must have progressive dementia
4. must be delusional and hallucinate frequently about WMD
5. must have narcissistic personality with pathological tendencies

Bush, Cheney, Rove, Scooter, Gonzales etc.. none of them seen capable of even simple repetitive tasks let alone managing a department of government.

He was the wrong choice from the beginning but we've seen it time and time again. Bush appointing of buddies and people he owes favors to instead of appointing QUALIFIED people. Maybe the Repubs have no one qualified to do much of anything, it seems like it.

He also contradicted himself all in one breath and one sentence. "Procedures may not have been followed but no laws were broken." In the Office of the Attorney General, isn't following established procedure upholding the integrity of the office?

The amazing thing here is the man still cannot justify the firings!! He still has no reasonable explanations for his actions. He offers no true motive, and when one is suggested, he denies it. He "doesn't remember" ???
What the .......??
