I like a good action flick, and am fully aware that most of them are more 'a fun ride' or an exhibition of machismo than actually revolving around the evolution of cinema.

However, have any action films ever won critical acclaim on a serious level? That is to say real 'action' features, as opposed to 'action thrillers' or features from other genres that might have the odd action-orientated scene.

Are such films ever taken seriously? Thanks

Movies like The French Connection, Serpico, The Godfather, all won critical acclaim. It's kind of hard to define "action" picture though, because a lot of great dramas have enough action in them to be classified as either.

I do believe there are more than a few great action movies that did evolve cinema. To me the most noted would have to be "Aliens". Some think it is just Sci-fi but I would say that it is more action than anything. It was nominated multiple times at the academy awrds in 1986, including best picture. Come to think of it, except for "Titanic", all of James Cameron movies are heavy action and with the technology to help evolve special effects to the next level.

Depends, of course, on your definition of "action."

The French Connection comes to mind, as does Bonnie and Clyde - both with lots of action, and laudes from the critics, as well as the box office.

How about Star Wars? I think lots of critics liked that one - not to mention Indiana Jones.

"The Rock" and "Armageddon" both received the Criterion DVD treatment, which is only given to movies that are considered great in their genre, or have some other feature or technique important to the development of cinema. see http://www.criterion.com/asp/.

Also, movies like "Wages of Fear," "Bullitt," (first ever car chase!) and "The Maltese Falcon" have all received much acclaim.

Sure. "The French Connection" leaps to mind. Changed cinema forever and is very well respected as the first movie of it's kind.
