To stop companies like Microsoft creating a monopoly. If we didnt have standards everyone would do what they liked and technology would not progress as fast as it does today. Companies would just say "we are doing it this way". With standards it means there is competition when companies are developing new technologies as they must conform to a set of rules.
If we didnt have standards, you wouldnt have been able to ask this question and I wouldnt have been able to answer it on the internet. The reason: without standards the internet would probably not exist today!

Which standards? (Please add details...)
In general, standards exist so that, when one person does some work, and leaves it unfinished (as we all must do someday, by reason of death), someone else may pick up on it with "standard" training, learned in a school where those "standards" are taught, and carry on that same work to another point of progress!

Take the USB port, the size, shape, and number of pins are all standardized, it would be very troublesome if each company made USB ports their own way.
Standards, whether it is for USB ports, electrical outlets, or anything else, are sets of rules and regulations that allow an item to work, no matter who makes it.

so we all know how things should be done, pretty much the same reason RFC's exist to create protocols etc...
we'd all be in a bit of a pickle, although MS often take a well know standard and think.... nah we'll do this instead and then it will only work with thier software, take the TCP/IP stack and NetBIOS!
