I keep my room clean and tidy, and don't leave old food around. A group of maybe a dozen flies - fairly small, but definitely flies - have decided it's a good idea to buzz around the light-bulb fixture in the centre of the room in a big group.

What makes them gather there? It only started now that spring has come, and I don't want them hanging around. I also don't want to spray them with fly spray, since it's not great for people and I don't like killing.

I have taken to shooing them out the window, but it's tricky. They seem to regroup whenever my windows are open.

My room is at the top floor of our place, if that bears any relation on things...

Get a container [empty] like a pepsi or coke bottle.....rinse it.

Put some small portion of sweet food item in the bottom; honey, piece of banana, jelly would be good (fruit scent, which is probably why wine works),

Put a funnel on top and let it sit.

The flies can and will go in, but they usually can't find their way back out the narrow opening.

Take the bottle outside and release them (if that's what you want). Do this until you catch them all.

Good luck.

I agree about not killing them - why kill things if you really don't have to???

Anyway - I have a method, which I actually quite enjoy doing as well. It's more satisfying than swatting flies, and a lot more effective.

Get a CLEAR see-thru plastic bag (the thin type that you use for wrapping stuff it), and open it up like a funnel, so that you're holding it by the narrow bit, and the rest is open like a hood. Make sure it's a clear one, so that the fly can't see it coming.

Just approach a fly slowly when it's sitting on a surface, and reeeeally slowly put the plastic bag over it. Since flies usually take off backwards (to the back of their body), put the plastic bag over them from behind slighly. Usually they will only notice the bag when it's right on them, and fly straight into it!

So you can then close the open "hood" of the plastic bag, and just take the fly outside, shake the bag, and find the next one... I can't explain why but it's kinda addictive too! :-p

Gee, I heard of people not liking killing...but flies??? I hate them and would do away with them all in a flash.
Some good suggestions given already, but seriously, I still think there's something about that light fixture and I'd check it out.

They are not house flies, and they don't go for your food, and they hardly ever land. Right? They are supposed to be hanging around under trees but they like your ceiling too.
I don't know what to do about them. They're not hurting anything, but they are annoying.

I don't know why this works, but pour a glass of wine and let it sit out overnight. You'll have a glass full of dead flies in the morning. Keep doing it until they're all gone.
