In some forms of meditation, "om...." is used; however "om..." is not used during the practice of Minfulness Meditation.

No I don't. I meditate by controlling my breathing and focusing on a particular object.Then closing my eyes and clearing my mind of as much thought as possible.I don't make a sound.

NO! Only hippies and Indian Fakirs do that. Most people I know say either "Boomshankaah" or "Cheers", depending on the type of meditation involved.

I try, but I imagine how silly I must look and then I start laughing, have to wait a couple of minutes to concentrate after that.

no, i dont meditate.
but i dont think people say umm unless there are sounds around them, and the ummmmmm is just to block out the distractions.
