the past is where we come from and who we are. Without knowing the past, more dictators might try to take over the world (Hitler, Stalin). Without knowing the past, the sacrifices millions of men and women in the military have made for YOU will be forgotten. Our history teaches us lessons we should take to heart. The world stood by why millions of Jews died because they were Jewish. Then is it right to do nothing about the massacres in Africa?

to answer your other question... without the past there would be no now. Without a now there is no future. So no past equals no future

Well, in response to many of the other answers, I'd like to offer a revised quote:

"Those who don't understand the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them ... as are those who do."

I don't think it's about learning from past mistakes -- we don't have a very good track record there, do we?

We need to understand the past because it's necessary to understanding the present.

Think about your own life. You use your history to understand or explain what's going on now, don't you?

If you're telling someone about something that's going on now, or that just happened, you often have to give a history of the situation, of yourself, of the relationship you're talking about, in order to give a clear idea of where you are now, and what's going on now, and what it means to you, and why.

Same with with people in groups.

If we approach current situations without understanding how they got to be that way, they we approach them from complete ignorance about what's really going on now.

You need to understand what went before, to understand the now, and make rational decisions as to what to do.

The way history is taught, unfortunately, does NOT teach for this.

History isn't boring, it's just taught in a boring way, and a completely useless way.

What we should do is teach now, and use history to understand now better.

Then people would both remember what they learned about history, and learn how to use history better.

Absolutely. We live in the present and we shouldn't lose sight of that. But in my opnion the path to the future is through the past. Name one mistake that has never been made? The problem with us is we keep making the same ones, and have to keep looking back to the past for examples to correct them.

"Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it." I don't remember who said it but it is true in so many ways. As individuals, each person's decisions and actions in a given situation are based on their own personal experience. Society is the same just slower. We learn from past experiences, good or bad, and react in situations based on our experiences. Knowing history prevents the repeating of the same mistakes or ensures the repeating of successes.

Of course you must know your history - it is part of you, it'swhat happened in the past, it is the tread of time,
Hitory teach us the opportunities taken or missed, our mistakes, these are your arms for the future - as they say "ignore history and you are bound to relive it" !!!
Learn from your past, learn from your mistakes, learn from your successes - all are in the past - history !

We study our past to learn where we came from. In addition, studying the past helps us not to repeat the same mistakes. Take for example the atomic bombing of Japan, there hasn't been one since, and likely the people who "pushed the button" here in the United States probably wouldn't have done it if they knew the true repercussions.

We learn from our past to "not to make the same mistake twice".

Because we keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over and over and over again.
