The clothier was considered to be middle class, an artisan, who was neither peasant nor was he nobility. He might have a house in town, two stories, with the shop on the bottom floor and his living space above. He might have apprentices and he could earn quite a good living and have a good income and money. Still, no matter how much money he would have, he would still not be part of the nobility.
