The answer to your question (or what I think your question was)... is bands are labeled "sell-outs"... because the producers have all the money and regardless of what anyone says... THEY call the shots. Bands do as was mentioned before, move on to other labels for several reasons MOST are because they are offered a better deal.. but a few... VERY FEW)... are offered the ability to create music thats from their hearts and sometimes flops come of this which is why the producers (who actually CONTROL the music you are forced to listen to on a daily basis... if you listen to the radio)... have such a heavy hand in the industry. Contrary to popular belief the musicians only create in most cases, what the producers allow them to produce.

How do we fix this???? Support Indie labels who don't try to control the music/musicians! Support internet radio stations.... there are Millions of them ALL playing music that was tracked in someones home studio and or some local recording studio.... BUT the music IS unaltered by a producers hand and is what the musician wanted you to hear in the first place.
you asked...

Because they either change their sound (Metallica) or switch to a mainstream label (Green Day). I don't find any logic in calling anyone a sell-out though. Of course all bands eventually try a new sound, and of course all bands would go to a bigger label, so their career takes a turn for the better.

When a band:
1. Changes their music style to sell more recordings. Greenday going from party punk to political emo is an example.

2. An anti-establishment artist becomes part of the establishment. Black Sabbeth (TV commercial music), LL Cool J and Ice Cube are examples of this.

Bands become sell outs when they start caring about money rather than their original fan base. The most recent example of this is Fall Out Boy. They used to have a great alt. rock sound, now they're complete s***. Also the All American Rejects have done this recently.

Basically they'd rather have money then to play good music.

Because they look to get rich, and famous. Music is supposed to be about heart and feelings.

You throw a bunch of dollar bills in front of a band like say, METALLICA, they were one of the most kick as bands, then they put out that terrible "Black album", and everyone and their hamster were listening to it. Then they blew up, and you had people who wouldnt even give two cares about them back in the day when they were riding the lightening.

They seen a bunch of money, and it consumed them.

Im not saying they arent great musicians, but once you had preppy boys and girls singing their songs, it was all over.

I'm not sure what your question is but if I follow...
Some bands are considered sell outs because they start creating music based on what the record producers think will sell instead of based on what their passion is.
