yes, it is the best rivalry in sports.
michigan vs ohio state is a great rivaly but i dont see how it could be the best. for one, it's a college rivalry, no players are going to be part of it for more than 4 years. there's plenty of red sox and yankee players who have been on their respective teams for over 4 years.
more people will watch a yankees vs red sox playoff game than any college bowl game. the regular season and post-season games are all highly televised, every sports media outlet goes on and on about it when the teams are playing each other. tickets to every game they play between each other is sold out every year. there are riots win or loose when it comes playoff time.
as for the lakers and celtics being a good rivaly. maybe 20 years ago, but as long as the celtics are the least popular team in boston i don't see how anyone can consider it a rivalry.

I'm sorry people but the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry has lost some spunk between the players. Sure the fans still hate each other and that would never change but there's no more bad blood between players. Now the Mets and Phillies really hate each other. You even have Cole Hammels going off at the mouth already. There's just no plot anymore between the Red Sox and Yankees. They just play the games and that's it.

Yes, definetly. The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is one of the longest and most bitter rivalries in professional sports. For over 100 years, the Yankees and Red Sox have been chief rivals. Both USA Today and Sports Illustrated have dubbed it "the fiercest rivalry in sports". Coming from those two sources, who can deny it!
GO SOX!!!!!

No. I hate them both, but the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry is bigger just b/c college football rivalries are so much more personal for fans b/c not everyone can belong to the yankees or red sox, but lots of people call those schools their homes and alma maters.
Hail hail to Michigan, the cesspool of the West!

I'm a CA guy and I think that it is the biggest and best rivalry. A lot of that though has to do with the deep and rich history of the 2 franchises. Which leads me to wonder if the rivalry will lose anything when the Yanks get a new stadium. Just my $.02

It's the most hyped, and probably the most watched, but yankees own the red sox all-time.
One thing that impresses me with Rangers-Islanders in hockey is that whether the teams suck or are good in any given year, they always play hard against each other, and the all-time series is almost even.

I hope you mean professional sports because there are some college rivalries that would make the NY-Bos thing look tame: Army/Navy, Ohio St/Mich, Okla/Tex, etc...
In pro sports, I think it's way up there, if not the fiercest.

No. There ahve been several polls done and the result is that the Michigan/Ohio State football rivalry is the biggest--at least in US sports. World-wide, you might get a different answer, but it wouldn't be NY/Boston.

biggest in baseball? yes
biggest in sports? i doubt it.
even though the only other sports i watch are soccer and college bball, i find it very hard to belive that there aren't bigger or at least the same degree of sports rivalries out there.
