You know the little button that you push for air condition, if I don't leave it on my car gets hot. I got an oil leak, but that was after, I don't know why it's doing this.

smoke's answer is correct.

Odds are you have electric fans in your car. Turning on the A/C automatically kicks off the cooling fans to keep the engine cool.

The most likely causes for a car's electric fans to not start up when the engine get's hot is the fan relay switch is stuck open.

This is a small electrical device, and is not too expensive to replace.

(I of course assume your sensors are working properly since you can see that the car is overheating... The process is basically sensor detects engine is getting hot, computer attempts to turn on fans by sending signal to the fan's relay switch. Relay switch turns on the electric fans. Electric fan motors start spinning)

I'm assuming since you know it's overheating you can see the sensor working, and since hitting the A/C switch causes your fans to turn on the fan motors work. So the most likely cause would then be the relay switch.

You don't say what kind of car you have so I am going to guess that it has an electric cooling fan or fans. It sounds like the fan is not working for some reason when the A/C is turned off. When you turn the A/C on this also makes the fan or one of the fans run all of the time. Raise the hood, start the car and turn on the A/C and see which fan is running, you probably have two. the fan that is not running has a sensor to tell it when to run and stop. This sensor may be bad, or the fan itself may be bad.

Check your radiator when the engine is cool to see if you have enough water. Also, you may have a bad thermostat.
